Khayal is no more

LAHORE: Eminent essayist, author and academic Dr A H Khayal passed away in Lahore on Tuesday afternoon. He was 88.

Funeral prayers for the late scholar will be offered on Wednesday (today) after Asr prayers at the Shadman graveyard near the Ladies` Park.

He left behind a widow, Prof Shamim Khayal, who retired as Lahore College for Women University`s English department chairperson, a son and a daughter.

Prof Abdul Hameed Khayal received his doctoral degree from the University of London, UK, in 1967 for his dissertation on British philosopher and essayist J.S.

Mill. He contributed witty essays to several national English dailies.

He retired as vice principal of the Government College, Lahore, (now a varsity) in 1987 after remaining chairperson of its English department.

After attaining autonomous status in 1997, the GC administration requested Dr Khayal to be a visiting faculty member while honouring him with the title of `Distinguished Professor`.

He taught at his alma mater till 2008.

Known for his wit among his peers and pupils, Dr Khayal was the teacher of both Prof Dr Khalid Aftab, the founding vice chancellor of GCU and Prof Dr Khaleequr Rahman, its present VC.

Prof Rehman said Dr Khayal was still a source of inspiration for him and thousands of other Old Ravians.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif also expressed deep sense of sorrow and grief over the death of Dr Khayal.
