2017-06-17
GILGIT: Flash floods caused by a glacial lake outburst killed several cattle and washed away shepherd homes and cattle pens in Haramosh valley of Gilgit.

Authorities said the flooding killed about three dozen cattle, including goats and cows, in a nearby pasture in Jutial village on Thursday. They added the flash flood occurred from the Rakapushi mountain and also destroyed about a dozen cattle pens and shepherd homes.

However, no human casualty was reported from the disaster. Rakaposhi is in the Karakoram mountain range situated in the middle of Nagar district and Danyore and Bagrote valleys of Gilgit.

Rakaposhi means snow covered in the local language. It is also known as Dumani (mother of mist or mother of clouds).

The mountain is ranked 27th highest in the world and 12th in Pakistan and is popular for its beauty.

Haramosh has been declared sensitive area for glacial lake outbursts and GB environmental protection agency has also installed early warning system in view of the phenomenon.

Ali Mohammad, a resident of Haramosh, told Dawn that the area was vulnerable to natural disasters. He said besides glacial lake outburst phenomenon, the people also faced snow avalanches taking place frequently.-Correspondent
