CONGRATULATIONS to the government and its finance minister for presenting and getting it passed in its fifth annual budget without any debate in the National Assembly due to opposition parties` boycott.
Perhaps, the finance minister`s view was that for peaceful transfer of power and consolidation of democracy the best way was to ignore the opposition completely. In a real democracy, the opposition is a vital part of the system.
If no importance is given to its demands and proposals, it is akin to denial of democracy.
Unfortunately, in our country, there is no trace of democratic norms except the holding of elections after every five years and formation of majority rule, which is neither representative nor dictatorship. At the best, it could be labelled `mob democracy` where the majority bulldozes all suggestions of the opposition and has its way in everything.
It seems Edmund Burke`s words that the tyranny of the multitude is multiplied tyranny fits well on our country.
