2015-09-17
WASHINGTON: UN Secretary-General Thant, who arrived back in New York today [Sept 16], is reported to have proposed a meeting between President Ayub and Prime Minister Shastri under his or some other third party`s auspices.
This suggestion may figure in his report to the Security Council tomorrow.
UN sources said today that the SecretaryGeneral does not consider his peace mission to India and Pakistan a total failure. He is reported to feel that the chances of a cease-fire, though slim at the moment, are not hopeless. It is learnt that the Secretary-General`s trip to the sub-continent has shown him that there is little prospect of peace in that area unless the substance of the Kashmir dispute was tackled and resolved.
Some UN circles think that U Thant may have some suggestions on Kashmir negotiations following a cease-fire in his report to the Security Council. It is not known whether they would include some terms of reference for such negotiations. Correspondent [Meanwhile, as reported by agencies from Jakarta], Third Deputy Prime Minister, Doctor Chairul Saleh of Makasar, capital of Sulawesi (Indonesia) has said that Indonesia might send its volunteers to Kashmir, if necessary to support the people of Pakistan in their struggle against the Indian aggressor. Addressing a mass rally yesterday, he reiterated that Indonesia firmly stood behind the people of Pakistan against India.
Doctor Sharif, Minister for Higher Education and Science, addressing the All Indonesians Students Working Conference in Bandung, said that India`s aggression against Pakistan was a desperate act which must be denounced. The conference called upon the Indonesian Government to sever diplomatic relations with India and to boycott all trade with India.
About 10,000 Indonesian youths at a demonstration and rally in Malang, an important city in East Java, denounced Indian aggression against Pakistan and Kashmir and offered themselves as volunteers to take part in the holy war against Indian imperialism.
