Gender inequality

2015-09-17
APRPOS Huma Yusuf`s article `Gender inequality` (Sept 14). The writer has described the quota system for women`s representation as a positive omen for our country.

It is good that the number of women sitting in the assemblies is increasing.

However, if we examine their performance, we find that not much has been done. This is because these women lawmakers have taken an oath to represent and defend their respective political parties.

This state of affairs can be rectified by electing them on general seats rather than electing them on reserved seats. Similarly the law needs to be amended to bindpolitical parties to award at least one-third of the seats to women. Only such measures will ensure adequate and genuine representation of women in the country.
