`Voltage glitch` leaves woman, daughter dead

SAHIWAL: A woman and her four-year-old daughter electrocuted when live wires fell on them in Masoom Nagar, Pakpattan, on Wednesday. More than three dozen villagers also suffered electric shocks while all electric appliances were damaged due to a malfunction in the voltage supplies.

Villagers said 220-volt power wires melted because of a sudden surge in voltage and burnt wires fell on Farhat Bibi and her fouryear-daughter Anam. Bothsuffered burn wounds and died at the scene. More than three dozen people suffered electric shocks when they touched electric appliances.

A few days back, the village transformer broke down.

The Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) repaired and installed it on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, the voltage malfunction occurre d which burnt pole wires.

The villagers protested against Mepco and demanded a high-level inquiry into the situation.

Sub-Divisional Officer Zahid Sharif refused to comment.
