THE governments in Pakistan in recent years have frequently spoken in favour of the so-called `two-state` solution to the Palestine issue.
Even in recent times, the Pakistan Foreign Office has expressed `support` for the said option. Many might struggle to notice that it is contrary to the principled stance that was first outlined by the Quaid-i-Azam, who minced no words to state categorically that the creation of the state of Israel was illegitimate.
This has historically been the official stance of the state of Pakistan that reflects the resolve and aspirations of the predominant majority of the people of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
The Constitution duly provides for a nationwide referendum to be held on any matter of extreme national importance in order to sound out the will of the people.
If there has to be a change in our policy regarding the Palestine issue, the government should go for a referendum on the matter. It is incumbent upon all political parties and the media, including civil society, to rise to the occasion and voice the prevailing public sentiment on this issue.
