MPs pledge to raise voice for minorities

LAHORE: Minorities specific legislation is essential for social cohesion and interfaith harmony.

This was consensus among some members of the Punjab Assembly at a conference organised by a non-government body -Pattan Development Organisation (PDO) -here on Thursday.

The event was held to assist the parliamentarians in bringing reforms in the existing legal framework by granting rights to the members of the minority communities in areas of political participation, religious freedom and minoritysensitive governance.

Ms Rabia Ghani of PDO presented proposed legis-lative actions before the MPs. The members were concerned at low political participation and representation of the minorities, as their quota had decreased gradually.

A number of MPs belonging to various political parties participated in the meeting and unanimously pledged to voice the concerns shown during the meeting in the assembly.

They included MPAs Shunila Ruth, Sadia Sohail Rana (PTI), Shehzad Munshi, Rahila Khadim Hussain, Hussain Jahania Gardezi, Shazia Kamran , Fozia Ayoub (PML-N), Khadija Umar (PML-Q), Iram Hassan Bajwa, Nighat Sheikh (PML-N).
