All bunkers in Kurram to be dismantled by March 23, cabinet told

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet was informed on Monday that Kurram tribal district would be completely de-weaponised, with bunkers, used by warring tribes for firing at each other in the past, to be demolished by March 23.
During the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur here, officials disclosed that 151 bunkers had been dismantled in the district since the signing of a peace accord on March 1, according to an official statement.
The cabinet also approved Rs98.3 million funds for procuring explosives to destroy the remaining bankers in Kurram.
It has already given the goahead for establishing a special security force for the tribal dis-trict, with work under way to set up both temporary and permanentsecurityposts.
During Monday`s meeting, officials said 189 people lost lives to violence in Kurram since October 2024, so the government ensured a peace agreement for the district. They briefed participants about the implementation of the government`s decisions for restoring law and order in the district.
The officials said 120 security posts would be established along the local roads.
The cabinet also approved recruitment of 407 personnel to be equipped with Rs764 million essential supplies, designs of security posts, and funds for peace plans.
The chief minister said those posts should be established at the places from where attacks from long distances could be effectively monitored and countered to protect public life and property on a permanent basis.
The cabinet also reviewed plans for the restoration of damaged infrastructure in Kurram, with officials putting the costs of rehabilitation of the destroyed Bagan Bazaar at Rs480 million.
They also said in order to ensure uninterrupted supply ofessential goods to the residents, nine convoys comprising 718 vehicles had so far been sent to Kurram.
The officials said the provincial government`s two helicopters transported around 4,000 people and 19,000kg of essential medicines to Kurram.
The cabinet also approved the release of 1645 metric tons of Passco-imported wheat from Kurram godowns to the residents.
It allowed one-time five-year age relaxation and four attempts to the candidates of the Provincial Management Services exam and declared that in future, such competitive examinations should be conducted on an annual basis like the CSS exam.
The cabinet approved the release of Rs359 million for monthly ration and sustenance allowance to the North Waziristan residents, who have been registered as internally displaced persons since June 2014.
The cabinet approved a proposal to formally apprise the federal government of a provincial assembly resolution about the establishment of regional offices of Foreign Office in all divisional headquarters of the province, especially in Abbottabad andSwat, to address the issues related to the attestation of students` documents.
It also allowed the reconstitution of the Provincial Transport Authority and the nomination of three non-official members for it.
The cabinet approved the hiring of private legal counsel for defending the Control of Narcotics Substances Act as well as the imposition of provincial excise duty in the Supreme Court and Peshawar High Court, respectively.
It gave approval to a non-ADP Integrated Development Package for Dera Ismail Khan scheme with initial allocation of Rs2 billion in the current financialyear.
As per the SDGs report, poverty in Dera Ismail Khan is 66 per cent, with 55 per cent population without sanitation facilities and 48.2 per cent with no social protection coverage, so substantial improvement is required, according to the statement.
It added that the prevalence of stunting among children under five years of age in the district was 45.8 per cent and malnutrition 10.8 per cent, so a holistic approachwasrequiredtoaddress the issue by targeting sectors such as health, education, infra-structure and social protection.
The cabinet approved the KP Local Governments Property Lease Rules, 2025, for the fair market price of properties of local governments.
Officials informed the cabinet about the enhanced cost of the revised PC-I of the `Design and Construction of Residential/Non Residential Building in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa District PeshawarPhase-P project from Rs651 million to Rs888.609 million.
The chief minister ordered the preparation of a proper plan to construct high-rise buildings in the provincial capital to address the housing needs of the employees and said that programme should be included in the next ADP.
Adviser to the chief minister Musaddiq Abbassi briefed the cabinet on the proposed anti-corruption awareness plan.
The chief minister ordered the launch of honesty awards and enactment of rules to check corruption.
He also directed the elementary and secondary education department to introduce the reciting of Darood Sharif in the morning school assemblies immediately after recitation from the Holy Quran.
