Canal breach inundates crops on hundreds of acres

TOBA TEK SINGH: Crops on hundreds of acres were inundated when a breach occurred in Gogera branch canal near the Bhagat Canal Rest House on Friday evening.

As a result of the canal breach, farmland of Chak 359-GB and other villages were inundated, besides Nagra-Chohla link road.

According to locals, initially the breach was 10-foot wide, which later widened to 30 feet.

Rescue 1122 and irrigation department staffers, on being informed of the breach, reached the spot and were making efforts to plug it when this report was filed.

According to irrigation officials, the breach occurred because of overflowing of the canal.

ENCOUNTER: An alleged robber was critically injured in an encounter with the Jhang police on Friday.A police official claimed that the Kotwali police stopped three motorcyclists at its pocket, but they did not stop and opened indiscriminate fire on policemen which was also retaliated. When the firing stopped, the police found one of the motorcycles injured, however, the other two managed to escape.

He was admitted to DHQ hospital and was identified as Ali Raza Sial, of Sahiwal, wanted by police in 13 theft and robbery cases. He said he was injured as a result of the firing of his own accomplices.
