Rallies held in several towns

HYDERABAD/DADU/ MIRPURKHAS: A number of protest demonstrations and rallies were held in different cities and towns of Hyderabad, Dadu and Mirpurkhas districts on Sunday against feudal system and failure of police in arresting killers of eminent educationist Prof Ajmal Sawand, who was killed in Kandhkot on April 6 in an attack linked with an old feud between Sawand and Sundrani tribes.

In Hyderabad, the Sindh chapter of Awami Workers Party (AWP) held a protest against feudal system which, it said, claimed the life of Prof Sawand, besides a large number of other people.

The protest was led by Dr Bukhshal Thallu, Latif Leghari, Alia Thallu, Darya Khan Chandio and others.

The leaders said that the feudal system was thrust upon the people of Sindh and thismindset wanted to deprive Sindh`s intelligentsia of its power of resistance. They said that the system was patronised by political masters.

They observed that the judiciary did not dispense justice timely with the result that incidents of kidnapping for ransomhadincreased,besides honour killings in upper Sindh. These incidents had spelt disaster in these areas, they added.

They demanded that FIRs of Prof Sawand`s murder and Sundrani-Sawand tribal dispute should be registered against chieftains of the two tribes.

The Sindh United Party organised rallies and demonstrations in Mirpurkhas and several towns of Dadu and Jamshoro districts on Sunday.

Activists and supporters of SUP held a demonstration outside the Mirpurkhas Press Club and raised slogans against feudal system and murder of Prof Sawand.

Manzoor Memon, LalaAzhar Pathan, Mohammad Khan Marri, Abid Kori, Ali Murad, Mazhar Ali Abbasi, Rooplo Chauhan, Ubaidullah Banglani and Shaukat Panhwer spoke to the participants.

Local chapters of SUP took out rallies and held demonstrations in Dadu city, Khairpur Nathan Shah and several other towns of Dadu and Jamshoro district to condemn Prof Sawand`s murder and demand immediate arrest of the killers.

SUP vice president Hussain Azad Leghari and Dadu district secretary Nazir Ahmed Babar led a protest outside the KN Shah Press Club.

They condemned the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party for allegedly supporting the feudal system in Sindh.

In Kotri town of Jamshoro district, SUP took out a rally from Al-Madina Chowk to the local press club to demand end to the feudal system and immediate arrest of Prof Sawand`s killers.
