Pakistani Sikhs to observe religious event on June 16

TAXILA: As confusion prevails over dates of their religious festivals following amendment to the Sikh calender, Pakistani Sikhs are observing the `martyrdom day` of their fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Jee, as per the original Nanakshahi calender on June 16.

About 1,000 Indian Sikh pilgrims are also arriving to observe the occasion.

Deputy Secretary Shrines, Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), Syed Faraz Abbas, while talking to newsmen here on Sunday, said Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) decided to observe the `martyrdom day` of the fifth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Arjan Dev Jee also known as `Shaheedi Purab` in Sikh religion on June 16 according to the original Nanakshahi calendar.

He said Sikh pilgrimsfrom the UK and UAE were also expected to attend the event along with Sikh and Hindu devotees from across the country.

He said Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) have observed Shaheedi Purab on May 22 as per the amended Nanakshahi calendar.

He said the ETPB in collaboration with PSGPC would make all out arrangements to facilitate the Sikh pilgrims to provide better boarding and lodging facilities during their 10-day stay in Pakistan.

He said due to the prevailing law and order situation, strict security arrangements would be adopted for the safety and security of the visiting Indian Sikh pilgrims.
