PAT holds rally against Model Town killings

RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi chapter of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) on Sunday staged a protest demonstration against the provincial government for not arresting those involved in the Model Town killings.

The protesters were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans against the Punjab government. They also chanted slogans in favour of their demands.

The participants took out a rally from Liaquat Bagh to Committee Chowk and blocked traffic for two hours.A senior leader of the PAT told Dawn that the rally was a part of protests to press the government to launch an independent inquiry into the case.

`We are holding a rally every week in different cities and on June 17 the main gathering will be held in Islamabad to mark the anniversary of the Model Town tragedy,` he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Mushtaq Ahmed, the president of the PAT Punjab north, said the Punjab police had become a militant group of the ruling PML-N.

He said the provincial government unsuccessfully tried to influence the victims of Model Town tragedy.

`The silence of human rights activists and lawyers on the tragedy is strange.

They didnotraise theirvoicefortheinnocent people killed in the Model Town by the Punjab police,` he said.
