Border crossing in Kurram reopened

PESHAWAR: The government on Saturday opened the Kharlachi border crossing with Afghanistan in the Kurram tribal region, which had remained closed for four months.

Three other notified crossing and checkpoints in Kurram Agency Shahedan Dand, Borki and Tari Mangal however, remain closed.

The Foreign Of fice said in a statement that the decision reflected the government`s continued efforts for facilitating Afghan transit trade through Pakistan.

It clarified that Kharlachi was not a pedestrians crossing but was meant for facilitation oftrade and transit vehicles.

The government had closed all checkpoints on the Afghan border, including at Torkham in Khyber Agency and Chaman in Balochistan, af ter a deadly suicide bomb explosion at the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan killed over 90 devotees.

The other crossing points were opened later, but those in Kurram remained closed.

Tribal elders in Kurram welcomed the opening of the crossing. After Torkham and Chaman, Kharlachi is the third busiest crossing point with Afghanistan for bilateral trade.-Bureau Reporttrade and transit vehicles.
