SCA concerned over clogged drains

By Our Staff Correspondent 2016-07-18
HYDERABAD: The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) has expressed grave concern over the fact that heavy monsoon rains are predicted in Sindh, but drains have not been desilted so far.

In its meeting held here on Sunday presided over by Dr Syed Nadeem Qamar, the chamber alleged that millions of rupees had been allocated for desilting, but those were misappropriated.

If saline water drains were not desilted immediately, the situation would lead to huge devastations during monsoon rains, it said. The meeting observed that Shaink dryke`s repair work was not properly executed and apprehended that a breach in the dyke could destroy the agriculture sector.

It called for an inquiry as to whether funds meant for the repair were transparently utilised. In case of any breach, the Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (Sida) would be held responsible, it warned.
