OKARA: Four farm labourers were suffocated to death due to lack of oxygen in the well at village Laee Bala while three others, who attempted their rescue, fell unconscious and were shifted to the hospital in a critical condition.
According to Rescue 1122, a well housing a peter engine had become submerged in rainwater. The owner, a local grower, hired labourers to uncover the engine and drain the water.
As three labourers descended into the water-filled well, they reportedly lost consciousness due to a lack of oxygen. In an attempt to rescue them, four more workers entered the well but also lost consciousness and fell into the water.
Following their cries for help, local villagers rushed to the scene. Okara Tehsildar Muhammad Zaheer, along with his revenue team, also arrived.
All seven victims were retrieved from the well. Four of them Yasir (18), Shakil (30), Aslam (50) and Imran (40) were declared dead on the spot.
The three unconscious survivors Nazim (18), Jawad (18) and Yaseen (30) were shifted in critical condition to the Renala Khurd THQ Hospital.
