THIS is with reference to the letter `Loose dresses` (June 6). I fully endorse the views and wish to add that the women wearing burqa or abaya should consider their safety not only while sitting on motorcycles as pillion rider, but also when they are on foot on the road.
The length of sleeves and the dresses ismostly seen longer than required. I have seen abaya touching the floor and hiding the shoes while these women walked. When women with extra-long abaya walk on the road or climb a staircase, the abaya length makes them uncomfortable, increasing the risk of fall, which may lead to serious or even fatal injury.
I personally know of several incidents when women fell in public when their lengthy abaya suddenly got entangled with any sharp object, resulting in falls and injuries.
In my family, my grandmothers and aunts used to wear burqa, and the ideal length was four to six inches above the shalwar`s lower end or foot. They would walk comfortably. There is no reason for not using the appropriate length of the abaya when their ankles and feet are covered.
Women wearing burqa or abaya must consider this critical issue to ensure their safety, comfort and a risk-free walk or ride.
