DURING a visit to Karachi during Eid holidays, I was shocked by the ever present garbage, broken roads and the blatant disregard of traffic laws.
While having dinner at one of the largest restaurants near Bilawal House, I was appalled atthe safety standards, orthe lack of them, present. This restaurant accommodates more than 2,000 diners.
There was not a single fire extinguisher nor was there an emergency exit which could be used in the event of a fire or any other mishap. When the rain came, those sitting on the open-air rooftop scampered for the stairs and there was a stampedelike situation. It was just a stroke of good luck that no one was injured.
The Sindh government must wake up and implement the laws on public safety. I am sure such condition prevails in other restaurants of the city. Action must be taken before we have a tragedy.
