Remand extended in Perween Rehman murder case

KARACHI: An antiterrorism court extended on Monday physical remand of a suspect in the case of murder of renowned philanthropist Perween Rehman.
Police produced Imran Swati in the court after expiry of his first physical remand and the investigating officer sought extension in remand for further questioning, which the ATC-II judge accepted and extended the remand till Aug 28.
The suspect was arrested on Aug 1.
According to the prosecution, Ms Rehman, director of the Orangi Pilot Project, was gunned down by two motorcycle-riding assailants on Manghopir Road on March 2013.
Ahmed Khan alias Ahmed Ali alias Pappu Kashmiri was already in prison while Rahim Surti, Ayaz Surti, Amjad Afridi and others were absconders in the case, which was registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Pirabad police station.
Later, Section 7 of the Anti-TerrorismAct, 1997, was incorporated in the FIR on a directive of the Supreme Court that had also ordered a judicial inquiry into the case by a district judge.
The judicial inquiry report had recommended that the murder be reinvestigated by an efñcient, independent and honest police ofñcer and expressed dissatisfaction over the existing probe report, stating that the police investigators had not hesitated to manipulate key aspects of the investigation.
Qari Bilal, the man blamed for Ms Rehman`s murder, was allegedly killed in a shootout with police a day after the philanthropist`s murder. But the inquiry reportcastdoubtonitandsaidthe storyof the mysterious encounter and recovery of a pistol failed to inspire confidence.
Remand extended in rape, murder case Another antiterrorism court extended on Monday physical remand of three suspects in a case of kidnapping, rape and murder of a minor girl.
The suspects have been booked for allegedly raping and killing a seven-yearold girl after abducting her for ransom inAbdullah Shah Ghazi Goth last month.
After the end of their remand, police produced them in ATC-I and requested for extension in their remand to enable police to complete investigation.
The ATC-I judge Bashir Ahmed Khoso allowed extension in physical remand till Aug 23.
A case was registered against the suspects under Sections 302 (premeditated murder), 363 (kidnapping), 365-A (kidnapping for extorting property, etc.), 376-II (gang rape), 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, at the Sachal police station.
The court also remanded a couple Naveed Waqar and his wife Uzma in police custody for two weeks in a case of kidnapping for ransom.
The couple was booked for allegedly abducting Rashid Hussain for ransom within the jurisdiction of Sharea Faisal police station.
Wasim`s car firing case A judicial magistrate sent to jail on Monday a suspect in the case of firing onthe car of former captain of Pakistan cricket team Wasim Akram following a minor accident.
Police produced Altaf Ahmed, driver of the vehicle, in the court after the end of his physical remand and the judicial magistrate (east) Kanize Fatima Zulfiqar sent him to prison on judicial remand till Aug 24. The court directed the investigating ofhcer to submit investigation report till next hearing.
The main suspect Amirur Rehman, a retired major of Pakistan Army, has already obtained an interim pre-arrest ball from a sessions court till Aug 20.
According to the prosecution, the legendary cricketer was on his way to the National Stadium on Aug 5 when a vehicle hit his car on Karsaz Road and after an exchange of hot words, the main suspect allegedly fired a shot which hit a tyre of the former fast bowler`s Mercedes.
A case was registered under Sections 324 (attempt to commit murder), 337-H (2) (hurt by rash or negligent act), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of 50 rupees) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the Bahadurabad police station following the firing incident.
