Quaid meets refugees

2022-09-18
QUAID-E-AZAM Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Governor-General of Pakistan, and his sister, Miss Fatima Jinnah, paid a surprise visit to three refugee camps and the new transit centre for refugees on Wednesday af ternoon [Sept 16].

They were shown around by Mr Salahuddin Ahmad,Refugee Officer,Karachi.

It was a nerve-wracking hour which the Quaid-e-Azam and his sister spent with the unfortunate victims of Sikh and Hindu communal frenzy in Indian states and the East Punjab.

Every refugee to whom they talked had harrowing tales of barbarities and wholesale liquidation of Muslim population to narrate.

... In the Bohra Jamaat Khana, which houses about 250 refugees ... a jagirdar of Alwar State, who once paid a land revenue of Rs 12,000 but now was in tatters, related the gruesome murder of the Muslims of the state ... . He said: `We were men of means but now we are paupers. We cannot look after even our family widows. We beg of you to make arrangements for their maintenance. As for us, we asked for nothing but an opportunity to earn a living... .` The Quaid-eAzam was visibly moved by their tales of misfortune... . The Pakistan State, he said, would do all it possibly could to help them.
