ST worker sentenced to death in murder case

KARACHI: An antiterrorism court sentenced on Tuesday a man to death in a murder case.

Sanwal, alias Chayra, said to be associated with Pakistan Sunni Tehreek, was found guilty of killing bank officer Jahangir Hussain in Saddar in October 2012.

The ATC-VI judge, who conducted trial at the judicial complex inside the central prison, also directed the convict to pay Rs200,000 in compensation to the legal heirs of the deceased.

Moreover, the court also awarded a collective sentence of21years tothe convict and imposed fines in two connected cases for carrying explosives and illicit weapons. The capital punishment is subject to the confirmation of high court.

According to the prosecution, the Counter-Terrorism Department had arrested the accused in 2015 and also found explosives and weapons in his possession and said that he was affiliated with the ST and carried out the murder on sectarian ground.
