Canada outlaws FLQ

2020-10-18
OTTAWA: The extremist Quebec Liberation Front (FLQ) was outlawed throughout Canada yesterday [Oct 16] under the Government`s new emergency powers. This was revealed in the regulations issued under the War Measures Act. The regulations were tabled in the House of Commons....

In Montreal, police yesterday rounded up 200 Front members and supporters including lawyer Robert Lemieux, who had been representing the Front in attempted negotiations with the Government.

The extremist FLQ ... rejected the new terms to secure the release of two hostages and urged the Government authorities to reconsider their offer.

The rejection came after the Quebec Government had said it was willing to release five prisoners in exchange for the freedom of British Trade Commissioner in Montreal Mr James Cross and Quebec Labour Minister Pierre La Porte.

The Front`s condition for the release of the hostages is that 23 prisoners being held on terrorist charges are given safe conduct to either Cuba or Algeria with a ransom of 500,000 dollars in gold.

Agency [Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Islamabad,] President Gen A.M. Yahya Khan leaves Karachi tomorrow [Oct 18] morning for Cairo on way to New York to attend the special 25th Anniversary Commemorative Session of the United Nations.
