IT is shocking to learn that Pakistan`s ranking in the Global Innovation Index (GII) is 107th with a score of 22.31 per cent. There is an urgent attention by all research entities to know where we are lacking.
Singapore has earned the top slot in research and development ranking, while Sweden is on top, securing 66pc.
Since the world is moving at a fast pace in innovation and creativity, we must plan strategies to improve our GII ranking. This can be achieved only by investing in research and development.
I wonder why mineral exploration remains untapped for reasons not known to us. Loadshedding of electricity is another burning issue, but no appreciable efforts have been made so far to address the shortage of energy as exports are entirely dependent on keeping the wheels of industries moving.
One hopes that the ministry of science and technology will take serious notice of Pakistan`s pathetic GII standing and will ask all institutions to expedite research activities as expected globally.
