PM`s visit to tribal districts opposed

Bureau Report 2018-11-18
PESH AWAR: The All Fata Grand Alliance here on Saturday opposed Prime Minister Imran Khan`s likely visit to the newlyformed seven tribal districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and demanded the reversal of the erstwhile Fata`s merger with the province.

The alliance leaders held a jirga here, where Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal MNA Mufti Abdul Shakoor, former federal minister Malik Waris Khan Afridi, North Waziristan chief tain Malik Nasrullah Khan, Qabialistan Tahafuz Movement chairman Said Nazir Mohmand and elders from other tribal districts were inattendance.

`If Prime Minister Imran Khan can do a U-turn on other issues, he should also do a U-turn on the Fata-KP merger,` said a joint resolution, which was approved by participants in the concluding session of the jirga.

The elders said the previous government had got the 25th Constitutional Amendment approved by parliament without doing proper groundwork and without taking tribal people into confidence.

They said the Fata-KP merger had caused strong resentment among the residents of tribal region, who didn`t accept the `one-sided` decision.

The elders said the merger of tribal region with KP was unacceptable and therefore, the government should revisit it.

The resolution said the alliance rejected the prime minister`s likely visit to the tribal districts and that the people would hold protests if their demands werenot met.

During a meeting in Islamabad on Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan had directed Chief Minister Mahmood Khan to visit all seven tribal districts.

The KP government has merged more than seven directorates of the erstwhile Fata with the provincialsecretariat.

The jirga said the problems of the residents of the former Fata had increased after the region`s merger with KP.

It said the provincial police and revenue system were not acceptable to the residents of tribal districts, who had staged demonstrations against them in different areas.

The resolution demanded of the government to pay compensation to the people for damages to their properties, rehabilitate the internally displaced persons, and reconstruct health and educational institutions.
