Faryal calls for welfare of women inmates

KARACHI: Faryal Talpur, the central president of the Pakistan Pe oples Party`s women wing, on Saturday called for immediate action to ensure the rehabilitation and welfare of female prisoners, their children and minors in custody.

She also urged the women members of the Sindh Assembly to play an active role in advocating for and implementing measures that benefit female prisoners and their families.

Ms Talpur, who is also chairperson of the Sindh Assembly`s Standing Committee on Home Affairs, while presiding over a meeting of women lawmak-ers ofthe party sought details ofcurrent state of prisons and inmates.

A statement said that meeting, held at Zardari House, was also attended by Sindh`s Minister for Home Affairs, Ziaul Hassan Lanjar and Inspector General (IG) Prisons, Qazi Nazir which held extensive discussions regarding the welfare of female prisoners in Sindh`s jails.

Ms Talpur emphasised that immediate action is crucial to ensure the rehabilitation and welfare of female prisoners, their children and minors in custody, it added.

`Through modern rehabilitative programmes, jails could genuinely transform into reformative homes for inmates,` the statement quoted Ms Talpur as saying.
