HARIPUR: Lawyers and civil society activists on Saturday remembered former district and sessions judge and chairman of the KP Service Tribunal Ahmed Sultan Tareen, who passed away on Jan 9.
Noted speakers at a reference for Mr Tareen included former president of the High Court Bar Association Javed Khan Tanoli, president of the district bar association Asad Saeed Khan, Awami Forum chairman Qazi Saeed, PPP leader Aurangzeb Mughal, and Maulana Q azi Gul Rehman.
They speakers highlighted the personality and professional career of Mr Tareen and said the former judge was a down-to-earth person but a man of principles.
The speakers said before joining the judiciary, Mr Tareen was elected the nazim of his union council during Gen Musharraf`s government but refused to vote for the military ruler`s April 2002 referendum and opposed his service extension for next five years.
Mr Tareen also criticised Gen Musharraf for dislodging a democratically-elected government in October 1999.
The speakers also lauded the former judge`s courage and commitment to principles and recalled his decision, as a district and session judge, Bannu, to file a reference against sitting Supreme Court chief justice, Saqib Nisar.
They highlighted Mr Tareen`s efforts for resolving people`s problems and improving the living standard of neglected communities. Correspondent
