`My Academic Struggles are Stressing Me Out`
2025-01-19
Hi Auntie, I`m a teenage girl, who is about to turn 16 years old. I`m writing to you because I have been experiencing extreme stress and nervousness due to school pressure, to the extent that I even feel hopeless at times. I am unable to focus on my studies and, despite knowing the outcomes of not being prepared, I keep on wasting my time on social media.
During my recent exams, I was unable to focus on my syllabus and it felt like my brain was completely lost. As a result, I received very low marks and my parents got mad.
I try to work harder every time, but it does not work and I keep on becoming more hopeless. I am not that confident, which makes me fall behind in a lot of stuff, especially studies. I even avoid social and physical activities, and do a lot of daydreaming. Hence, I have no idea how to balance my life and not bea hopeless person.
I just want to have grades that make my parents happy. They sometimes don`t understand the circumstances that I`m going through, and my teachers sometimes assign excessive amounts of homework, which badly disturbs my routine.
How do I find ways to engage more in my studies, without taking stress and getting worried over minor issues? School Girl Dear School Girl, What you`re feeling is more common than you think. Many students your age feel the pressure to do well in school, meet their parents` expectations and manage the work. It`s a lot to handle. You are not weak... you are just human.
Let`s start with your studies. It might help if you approach your work in small chunks. For example, instead of telling yourself to complete an entire chapter, try focusing on one section of the chapter at a time. Also, pick a time of day when your mind works best, and study in that time. Taking small breaks will also help.
Try limiting your use of the phone, especially social media, to certain times... perhaps after a study session.
Have a candid conversation with your parents about how overwhelming school can be. Let them know (calmly, please) that you`re trying, but are struggling with the workload. It would also be a good idea to talk to one of your teachers, if you`re finding their expectations too demanding, and explain what you`re going through.
Remember that even completing a single task, such as solving a few problems, is a win. Progress takes time and mistakes can happen. So, pat yourself on the back on the steps you complete as you progress.
Meanwhile, take good care of yourself by getting enough sleep, eating healthy food and exercising. If things continue to feel too heavy, consider talking to a school counsellor or a trusted adult.
Be kind to yourself.
