RAWALPINDI: The Adiala Road flyover project worth over Rs2 billion may not be completed before Eidul Fitr as stipulated by the divisional administration, an official from the Communication and Works Department the executing agency of the project said on Tuesday.

Instead, he said the project would be completed by the second week of April.

The construction of Adiala Road flyover at Khawaja Corporation Chowk was launched to address per-sistent traffic issues.

The flyover will be 1,915 feet long and 52 feet wide, as per its design.

Two 22-foot service roads will be constructed on both sides of the flyover.

Adiala Road is an important access road to the under-construction Ring Road which has been touted as a game changer for Rawalpindi.

According to official sources, plans are being worked on to make the road signal-free.

About eight kanals and 11.5 marlas oflandhave reportedlybeen acquired for the said flyover project on Adiala Road.

Moreover, the Communication and Works Department official also told Dawn that the work started in January and only 45 per cent of the work has been completed so far.

With the current pace, it will not be completed within the stipulated timeframe, he said.

`Initially, the government fixed the deadline for June 2025 but now, new directions have been issued bythe commissioner to complete it before Eidul Fitr which is not possible as the engineering department has to conduct the testing of pillars toensure the quality of construction material and it will take time,` he said.

He said that speeding up the con-struction work would compromise work quality.

The official said that the work would likely to completed by the middle of April and the flyover would be open to traffic by the month`s end.

He said that the divisional administration wanted to complete the work on the flyover project as the construction work on the GPO Chowk underpass was likely to start next week.

Due to the construction work on both projects simultaneously, the overall traffic system is likely to be affected in the garrison city, he added.

Meanwhile, Rawalpindi Commissioner Amir Khattak along with Deputy Commissioner Hassan Waqar Cheema visited the Adiala Road flyover and GPO Chowk underpass project sites.

He said work on the project has been started and FWO has been given the contract for the GPO Chowk underpass project. The commissioner said the government was committed to completing all projects, ensuringthe best standards. Once completed, the commissioner said the projects will benefit citizens during their daily commute.

He directed that all the business centres affected by the project be provided with the best possible facilities including parking spaces.

He ordered that the affectees should be taken on board and their suggestions should considered.

The commissioner also asked officials to ensure a smooth flow of traffic in the area.

Commissioner Khattak said that the completion of the project will not only guarantee ease for people but will also improve the overall traffic situation in the city.

He urged citizens to cooperate with officials and assured them that in exchange for the inconvenience, they would have long-term benefits.

He said that the departments concerned should utilise all resources at their disposal to ensure the timely completion of these projects.
