HYDERABAD: A meeting of Sindh United Party`s central executive committee has noted with concern that work on one of the six controversial waterways, Jalalpur canal, is still continuing despite official announcement suspending the activity on all these canals.

Sindh`s share in the Indus water is being stolen and that is why, the province has been facing water shortage, according to a statement issued after the committee`s meeting in Jamshoro on Sunday.

The meeting was chaired by SUP President Syed Zain Shah.

It appreciated the collective sustained struggle waged by people across Sindhthatforced thefederal government to get temporarily suspend the work on these controversial canals through the Council of Common Interests (CCI).

It lauded contribution of Sindh`s civil society, politicalforces and people at large for their collective struggle.

However, it noted with concern that work on Jalalpur canal was still continuing.

The meeting observed that summer crops could not be sown in Sindh due to shortage of water.

It also deplored that Sindh`s lands were being allotted to corporate sector and local population was being dispossessed from there. The meeting sought explanation from the Sindh government in this regard along with information about how many acres had been allotted so far.

The SUP meeting accused the ruling PPP of displacing locals only to escape accountability and to perpetuate its rule.

The party leadership decided to hold protests across Sindh on May 25 to save Sindh`s resources, including land, water and minerals from usurpation by the federal government. It also decided to hold party workers` conventions in Badin, Mirpurkhas and Dadu next month.
