Balochistan water crisis

2017-06-19
BALOCHISTAN is likely to face severe droughts in the future if the water crisis issue af flicting the province is not resolved.Agriculture is the mainstay of the province. Most of its people live in rural areas and earn their livelihood through agriculture. Thirty-one crops are cultivated on more than two million acres in Balochistan while many villagers also herd goats and sheep. They sell surplus animals and most of their agriculture produce in Karachi. Balochistan produces almost 35 per cent of Pakistan`s onion crop.

If the water crisis persists in Balochistan, it will adversely affect its agriculture, worsening the conditions of the already poor and underprivileged people of this province.

The federal and provincial governments must devise plans to rescue Balochistan from the water crisis through measures like judicious harvesting of rainfall and building mini-dams.
