`Govt to put war-torn province on way of development`

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has said that provincial government is focusing on police, agriculture and communication departments to put the war-torn province on the way of development.
According to a statement, the chief minister was talking to UN Assistant Secretary General for Asia and UNDP Director Haoliang Xu. He appreciated UNDP forhelping the province in reforming police and hoped that it would extend cooperation for both CPEC and non-CPEC economic development activities including the durability of peace and the improvement of security.
Mr Khattak said that police were being imparted training of international standard besides establishment of model police stations at tehsil level in the province.
The chief minister appreciated UNDP for its offer to help the provincial government in the productive sectors, especially agriculture, energy, mineral, education, health, information technology, irrigation, drinking water and some other social sectors.
The UN Mission head assured the chief minister of providing training to police, improving their capacity building, provision of equipment and modern technologyand extending model police stations to tehsil level. He also offered cooperation in productive sectors and social services dominated by agriculture development and revenue generation etc.
He informed the chief minister about the Rs800 million UNDP-sponsored programme for upholding of justice and police reforms in the province.
The scope of cooperation was being widened because of the fresh requests by the provincial government.
The UN Mission head appreciated provincial government`s programme for establishment of model police stations and assured it of all out supportin expanding the programme and establishing model police stations in all tehsils of the province.
He also appreciated dispute resolution approach of police and said that it was likefighting crimes as it helped in reducing conflicts and disputes among people at local level. He said that people needed peace and provincial government should plan it.
Mr Khattak said that the province reached a point where it had to depart from scenario of lawlessness and terrorismrelated environment to that of development. He also spoke about the hardships in dif ferent sectors, especially shifting of different agricultural produces from field to market, effective use of fertilisers, cold storage system and efficient marketing techniques.
