K ARACHI: After almost three months of his killing in an ambush on a road in the Garden area, the police admitted to have made `no progress` in investigation into the murder of Dr Birbal Genani, former senior director health of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and eye specialist, triggering strong reaction from the medical fraternity which sought the intervention from the chief minister for early arrest of the killers.
South-DIG Irfan Ali Baloch on Friday told Dawn that no concrete evidence had emerged in the investigation about the identity and possible motives of the killers so far.
He said the police had made `some arrests` in the case including the victimdoctor`s assistant but the arrested persons were released due to lack of any evidence linking them to the murder in the initial probe.
Asked about as to which aspect or motive was being focused by the investigators, the DIG said that they had a reason to believe that the murder was motivated by some personal considerations.
However, added that `we are working on it and different teams have been formed to this effect.
Dr Birbal Genani was shot dead in an attack on his car by armed men in Garden three months ago. The police had registered the case under section of 302 (murder) on the complaint of the victim`s brother Revo Genani.
The complainant, without giving any reason or motive, had stated in the FIR that the family had doubts over DrBirbal`s assistant being `directly` involved in the killing.
Dr Birbal, former senior KMC official and eye specialist, was a resident of Gulshan-i-Iqbal and ran a private clinic in Ram Swami area.
The relatives and friends of the late doctor said that he was a good-hearted person who helped people. The family had also said that they had no enmity with anyone.
PMA concerned Meanwhile, the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has expressed their concerns over lack of progress in the case.
In a letter to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, whose copy was also sent to the victim`s daughterSapna, the PMA said: `On behalf of the medical community, the PMA Karachi expresses serious concern over investigation of the brutal killing of our renowned colleague Dr Birbal, eye specialist and former senior director health of KMC.
`We have been in serious mental agony because the government and the law enforcing agencies have completely failed to bring the culprits into the book, which we believe is the fundamental constitutional right of all the citizens of Pakistan,` it said.
The doctors` supreme body urged the chief minister, who also looked after home ministry, `to speed up the investigation process and let us know the status of Dr Birbal case,` according to contents of the letter written by Dr Altaf Hussain Khatri, joint secretary PMA, Karachi.
