ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has reserved its decision on a petition filed by students of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), challenging the administration`s decision to cancel the summer session and order students to vacate hostels.
The case was heard by Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro. Students appeared in court along with their legal representatives, while university officials, including the registrar, were also present on the court`s summons.
During the hearing, the students` counsel argued that the summer session had been previously announced and fees had already been collected. `This session was important for students` academic progress. Why punish everyone for the actions of afew?` the lawyer contended.
The university registrar defended the decision, stating that over 1,100 students were residing in hostels without authorisation and that substantial dues remained unpaid. `We had to file FIRs under compulsion,` the registrar said, citing safety concerns and referring to a previous incident where the hostel was set on fire.
Justice soomro expressed concern over the treatment of students, remarking, `Children should be studying, not handcuffed. Are you parents? Do parents treat their children like this?` The judge emphasized the need for dialogue, saying disputes between students and administration should be handled within the institution, not in court. The court has reserved its verdict on the matter.
