By Mohammad Hussain Khan 2025-08-19
HYDERABAD: Senior DawnNews TV reporter Khawar Husain Bajwa, who was found dead in his car on Saturday night, was laid to rest in his hometown, Sanghar, on Monday.

His family members, relatives, friends and a large number of journalists from Karachi attended his funeral prayers.

An FIR of the incident was not lodged till late Monday evening as the bereaved family remained busy in his burial.

Earlier in the day, the second postmortem examination of Khawar Husain was performed under the supervision of a team comprising forensic and medicolegal experts at the Liaquat University Hospital (LUH), Hyderabad, on Monday.

In addition to viscera preservation for chemical examination, DNA sample of the deceased was obtained for confirmation of any violence in the incident.

Police surgeon Dr Waseem Khan, additional police surgeon Dr Adeel Rajput and Chairman Institute of Forensic Sciences and Forensic Medicine, Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, Prof Dr Waheed Ali Nahiyoon performed a postmortem examination on an application submitted by a brother of the deceased to the provincial health authorities.

Khawar was found dead in his vehicleoutside a restaurant off Hyderabad road in Sanghar under mysterious circumstances. A gunshot wound was visible on his temple.

According to Sanghar SSP, Aijaz Hussain, brother of the deceased, who accompanied his father on their return from US after hearing about the incident, told Dawn Monday at the LUH that his father had initially refused to have a postmortem examination done. `Nobody wants to see his/her beloved going through this unfortunate procedure.

`We were advised by the JIT [formed by the Sindh IGP] to have a second postmortem examination done for proper investigation; therefore, we consented to it,` he said.

Aijaz recalled that he had missed Khawar`s call made to him in US at 6am that day. `Since it was a holiday in US, I had put my phone on silent mode and gone to bed. I will regret it throughout my life,` he said.

While the investigators were struggling to determine whether it was a murder or suicide case, Aijaz, confidently said his brother couldn`t take the extreme step of suicide. `He was a man full of life,` he said. Even if this was a suicide, then what may be the reason?` he quipped.

About Khawar`s family life, he said, he was very happy with his family.

Talking to the media in Sanghar,Khawar`s father also insisted that his son was murdered, and asserted that he could not take his own life.

Khawar did not face any financial or any other issues, he argued. He appealed to Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to ensure justice in the case.

A provisional report on the findings of postmortem was not issued till late Monday evening. Police Surgeon coopted forensic expert from LUMHS.

Prof Nahiyoon said that Sternum bone (control sample for DNA) from chest was obtained along with nail clippings. `A swab sample for GSR (gunshot residue) is preserved as there is use of firearm, he said. It will confirm violence on deceased or otherwise,` said Prof Nahiyoon after postmortem examination.

He said provisional report would be shared with the authorities concerned.

According to him, stomach, part of liver and intestine were preserved by doctors in Sanghar.

`We received body wrapped in LUH for a [second] postmortem examination.

It is indicative of the fact that the body was given bath. In LUH today, we preserved visceras like kidneys, lungs, part of liver, small intestine and heart for chemical examination,` he said. The viscera would be sent to the International Centre for Chemical and BiologicalSciences (ICCBS) at Karachi University.

Police Surgeon Dr Wasim, however, avoided sharing any opinion about autopsy. He said cause of death was clear gunshot wound. Now it was to be determined whether it was a suicide or case of homicide, according to him.

AIG`s visit Meanwhile, AIG CTD, Azad Khan who was accompanied by DIG Benazirabad Faisal Bashir Memon and SSP Sanghar Abid Baloch paid a detailed visit to Sanghar. His junior colleague and member of team DIG Police Irfan Ali Baloch could not join him as he was busy in Islamabad and would be joining him on Wednesday.

Police sources close to team said police verified through police`s S4 (Sindh Smart Surveillance System) that Khawar passed through Karachi and Hyderabad toll plazas alone in his vehicle. AIG has examined coin, spent bullet casing and pistol, besides the vehicle.
