Tight security planned for prisons, airports in Muharram days

PESHAWAR: As part of security arrangements for Muharram in the province,theKhyberPakhtunkhwa home department on Saturday decided to enhance security of prisons, airports, sensitive and key installations, ensure air surveillance for secure nights operations, and install closed-circuit television cameras, walkthrough gates and scanners at all sensitive places in consultation with the respective divisional administrations and police.

The decisions were made during a high-level meeting here with home and tribal affairs secretary Akhtar Ali Shah in the chair.

The participants reviewed theoverall security arrangements in the province for Muharram and decided to ask the law-enforcement agencies to keep a close eye on terrorist groups to maintain law and order.

The divisional commissioners, who were also in attendance, briefed participants on security arrangements in their respective divisions.

The home secretary said the lawenforcement agencies would focus on maintaining law and order in the most sensitive districts including Peshawar, Hangu, Dera Ismail Khan and Kohat and would ensure foolproof security in other areas, too.

He said security of all roads in the province would be tightened to stop entry of terrorists, while a comprehensive security cover would be given to all imambargahs and mourning processions by impregnable cordons.

The home secretary said the relevant officials would meet leaders ofdifferentsects toensure thatbanon firebrand speakers is followed and that no one disturbs peace.

He said peace committees, divisional, district and police control rooms and provincial crisis management centre would be re-activated.

`There will be a ban on pillion riding. The law-enforcement agencies will thoroughly check hotels, motels, inns and hostels for undesirable persons. There will be no loadshedding during Muharram days.

All relevant departments, agencies will maintain close coordination among them to meet the challenge of protecting public life and property,` he said.

The home secretary said the police and administrations would check wall chalking and distribution of hate material, including pamphlets, leaflets and posters, to the people.

The participants agreed that all hilltops should be covered by lawenforcement agencies especially in Hangu, Kohat and other sensitive areas, to counter possible acts ofterrorism.

They also decided that the police and Frontier Constabulary personnel would patrol sensitive areas throughout Muharram, while there would be restriction on the movement of Afghan nationals in urban areas and that they would remain confined to their refugee camps.

The participants said the lawenforcement agencies would crack down on anti-social elements, proclaimed offenders, unlicensed weapons and vehicles without number plates and with tinted glasses.

They said intelligence agencies would be strengthened, while their close coordination with divisional and district administrations would be enhanced.

The participants said there would be a special focus on general policing across the province.

They said the district administrations would ensure cleanliness of Muharram procession routes and removal of construction material and obstacles from there.
