32 houses on city butte being demolished

SAHIWAL: The Pakpattan municipality has begun demolishing shops and houses located on a butte, declared dangerous because of their rundown condition.

The 200-foot high butte, located in the city, has the shrine of Baba Farid on its summit. Last year, mudslide happened at the butte because of rains and three people were killed.

Pakpattan Tehsil Municipal Administration Planning Officer Mian Ijaz informed Dawn a survey was conducted to gauge the condition of 140 buildings at the butte, and of them 32 were found unfit for use.

Tehsil Municipal Of ficer Malik Javed said earlier notices were served on theowners. He said they had demolished 25 buildings, and the task would be done till Monday.

Zahoor Ahmed, of 207/EB, was convicted of killing his uncle Muhammad Amin on July 3, 2002. He was sentenced to death on January 24, 2004. Later, his appeals against the conviction were turned down by the Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court while the president rejected his mercy plea.

The other death-row convict is Makhdoom, of 75/12-L, Chichawatni, who killed Muhammad Irfan, of Mian Chanun, during a robbery in 2003.

He was sentenced to death on June 14, 2005.
