DERA GHAZI KHAN: Begum Afifa Mamdot, a distinguished personality and a former federal minister, passed away in Lahore on Sunday at the age of 97.
Her father Nawab Sir Muhammad Jamal Khan Leghari first represented Dera Ghazi Khan in the Punjab Legislative Council in 1921. He had the honour to chair the first session of the West Punjab Legislative Assembly after independence.
Begum Afifa Mamdot was married to Nawabzada Zulfiqar Ali Khan Mamdot, the son of Nawab Shahnawaz Khan of Mamdot and one of the chief stewards of the Pakistan Movement, and the Muslim League.
She served as the federal minister for health, social welfare and special education, and as a representative of the country at the United Nations.
Her family includes notable figures such as her elder brothers Nawab Muhammad Khan Leghari, Sardar Atta Muhammad Khan Leghari and Sardar Mahmood Khan Leghari.
She was also the aunt of former president Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari.
Her Qul Khwani will be held on Tuesday (tomorrow) at 3 pm, at 110 G Model Town, Lahore.
