Milan and Atalanta crash out as Bayern advance on late goal

2025-02-20
LONDON: Ten-man AC Milan paid the price for Theo Hernandez` dismissal for diving when they crashed out of the Champions League last-16 play-offs against Feyenoord on Tuesday, while Bayern Munich needed a stoppage-time goal to see off Celtic.

It proved to be a miserable evening for Italian clubs with Atalanta also going out against Club Brugge and Benfica survived against Monaco.

Milan went out 2-1 on aggregate from a 1-1 at the night at San Siro, with the Dutch cancelling out Milan`s first-minute lead from former Feyenoord player Santiago Gimenez after the 51stminute ejection of Hernandez from Julian Carranzo.

`In football everything changes in a second,` said Gimenez. `We`re very disappointed. We started well and scored straight away. It seemed like Feyenoord couldn`t hurt us.

Today it happened to Theo but it can happen to anyone, this is football. We have the utmost respect for Theo. We will give him all our support.

Alphonso Davies struck in the fourth minute of stoppage time to give Bayern a 1-1 with Celtic and see the six-time winners remain on course towards the May 31 final in their home stadium 3-2 from both legs. Former Bayern reserve team player NicolasKuhn had scored for the Glasgow visitors who were very close to forcing extra time.

`That`s the Champions League. We played against a strong Celtic. We are happy to advance. It isn`t easy. We are playing so many matches, Davies told Prime Video.

Europa League holders Atalanta were beaten 5-2 from both legs against Brugge.

Teenage starlet Chemsdine Chalbi grabbed a brace in a stunning 3-1 victory in Bergamo while Ademola Lookman missed a penalty for the hosts who had captain Rafael Toloi dismissed late on.

Benfica came from behind twice to draw 3-3 with Monaco in a Lisbon thriller, Orkun Kokcu`s 84th-minute finish proving enough to advance 4-3 on aggregate.

`It was a tough night, we knew Monaco would put pressure on us from the start and we felt it, we didn`t play our best game, Kokcu told broadcaster SportTV.

`Still, we`re happy to have progressed to the last 16. I`m happy to have contributed to the result.

Feyenoord, whose Givairo Read was red-carded after the final whistle, advance into a firstever Champions League era last16 tie against either InterMilan or Arsenal.

Brugge will play French side Lille or Aston Villa, Bayern areup against fellow German Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid, and Benfica play top seeds Liverpool or Barcelona.

The last-16 draw is on Friday.

MORE WOES Seldom has a player`s sending off had such an influence on a game.

Hernandez was sent off for a dive when Milan were dominating after Gimenez`s opener heading home after Malick Thiaw had flicked on a first-minute corner had levelled the tie.

The France defender had earned his first yellow card before the break for lashing out at a Feyenoord player after a foul on team-mate Joao Felix.

But Milan`s defence looked anything but assured and Hugo Bueno crossed for Carranza to head Feyenoord level on the night in the 73rd, enough to put the Dutch team into the next phase.

Feyenoord`s Read was shown a red card following another melee after the final whistle.

It was another big setback for seven-time European champions Milan in a season in which they languish in seventh in Serie A.

`We were controlling the game, but the match changed in the second half. It`s difficult to take, because given how dominantly we started we should have won,` Milan`s Kyle Walker told Sky TV.

DAVIES TO THE RESCUE In Munich, Bayern had an early attempt from Serge Gnabry blocked but Celtic were far from intimidated and soon made their presence felt.

Callum McGregor aimed wide from a left angle, and Raphael Guerreiro cleared a shot from Kuhn in front of the goal-line, with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer beaten.

Harry Kane hit the crossbar for Bayern shortly before halftime but didn`t return for the second half.

Celtic were rewarded for their efforts in the 61st when Kuhn converted off Daizan Maida, with Bayern defender Kim Minjae notlooking good.

Bayern piled on the pressure in the hunt for an equaliser and eventually got it in the final minute of added time when Kasper Schmeichel clawed away Leon Goretzka`s header, only for Davies to scramble home the rebound from close range.

`It never looked like we were going to concede the goal that we did and sadly for us, we did. I can only take immense pride from the performance and the guys gave everything,` said Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

RUTHLESS BRUGGE Atalanta had lost 2-1 in Belgium on a controversial late penalty, and Brugge heaped more misery on them when Chalbi fired them ahead in the third minute into the far corner.

Ruthless Brugge hit twice more before half-time from Chalbi and Ferran Jutgla as the visitors gave Gian Piero Gasperini`s team a lesson in efficiency.

Halftime substitute Lookman scored seconds after the restart to unleash hopes of a miracle Atalanta just needed three more goals to level the tie but Simon Mignolet saved Lookman`s penalty in the 61st as those hopes gradually faded.

Atalanta had 29 efforts at goal, compared to seven from the visitors, and tried 89 attacks compared to 16 from Brugge.

BENFICA SURVIVE Benfica drew first blood in the 22nd from Kerem Akturkoglu but Monaco were level 10 minutes later from Takumi Minamino`s shot into the near corner.

The French league side continued to press, and Eliesse Ben Seghir fired into the bottom corner in the 51st to lock the tie at 2-2 overall with a 2-1 lead.

Vangelis Pavlidis scored a penalty, his seventh goal in his last six Champions League games, to make it 2-2 on the night, only for substitute George Ilenikhena to hit back for Monaco.

But Kokcu saw Benfica home.-Agencies
