Bigwigs continue diplomatic blitz

ISLAMABAD: A diplomatic blitz by Pakistan`s top leadership continued on Sunday, even as Iran seemed to waver on the question of participation in upcoming talks with the US.

Both Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar spoke to Iranian leaders, stressing the need for continued dialogue and engagement as essential to resolving the current issues as soon as possible.

In a 45-minute call with President Masoud Pezeshkian, PM Shehbaz appraised him about consultations with world leaders ahead of the expected second round of Islamabad talks.

According to the PM Office, the two leaders engaged in detailed exchanges on the current regional situation, while PM Shehbaz briefed the Iranian president about his own recent engagements with a number of world leaders, including the leadership of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkiye.

He said these interactions were most helpfulin building consensus in support of a sustained process of dialogue anddiplomacy, aimed at bringing lasting peace to the war-ravaged region.

The prime minister reaffirmed that, with the support of friends and partners, Pakistan would remain fully committed to its honest and sincere efforts to advance regional peace and security.

President Pezeshkian thanked the prime minister and Field Marshal Asim Munir for Pakistan`s strong commitment to the success of the peace efforts, while affirming that relations between Iran and Pakistan would continue to grow stronger in the days ahead.

The prime minister also thanked the Iranian leadership for their constructive conversations with Field Marshal Munir during the latter`s visit to Tehran this week.

Earlier in the day, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Dar also spoke to his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi.

Mr Dar emphasised the need for continued dialogue and engagement as essential to resolving the current issues as soon as possible for promoting the peace and stability in the region and beyond.

Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact, the Foreign Office said.

Separately, Mr Dar also held a call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, where he emphasised the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing all issues.

`They discussed key current developments in the regional situation, including the situation in the Gaza Strip,` the FO said.

`Both sides expressed hope for lasting peace and a durable ceasefire across the region, including in Lebanon, while reaffirming their commitment to broader stability and cooperation,` the FO said.

Mr Dar also received a telephone call from Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, the FO said.

Both counterparts appreciated the positive momentum in Pakistan-Poland relations and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest. They also held an in-depth exchange of views on the current regional and global issues, the FO said in a post on X.

Mr Sikorski commended Pakistan`s efforts in facilitating a ceasefire between Iran and the United States. He appreciated Pakistan`s continued commitment to dialogue and diplomacy in promoting the peace and stability. He also invited Mr Dar to visit Poland in June, the FO said.
