MARDAN: A suspected militant was killed when he opene d fire at a polio vaccination team in Tambulak area near Kuragh Chock here on Tuesday.

A constable accompanying the polio team was injured in the attack.

DSP City Shamroz Khan told Dawn that the militant had opened fire at constable Habib Shah, but another constable Waqar Khan returned fire and killed the attacker.

The constable received minor injuries and rescue personnel took him to the District Hospital.

The DSP said police immediately cordoned off the area and arrested brothers and other relatives of the militant and seized arms, including a Kalashnikov and two pistols, from their house.

He said Taliban militants might be involved in the attack because earlier also they had attacked polio teams and killed several health workers.

Mr Khan claimed that according to preliminary investigation the arrested men were wanted by Punjab police for involvement in severalcases ofrobbery.
