ANP not to demand PM`s resignation, says Asfandyar

By Mohammad Jamal Hoti 2016-05-20
MARDAN: Awami National Party president Asfandyar Wali Khan has said that his party will never demand resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif until he is proven guilty in the Panama Papers scandal.

Speakingat a pressconference here on Thursday after a meeting of his party`s think-tank, he said that acrossthe-board accountability should be carried out of all those people having offshore companies, adding that accountability should not be confined to Panama leaks alone.

He said that an impartial accountability process should begin against all those people who were involved in the Panama scandal, loan defaulters or those who had embezzled money during the Afghan war or were involved in any other corruption scandal.

He criticised Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf chief Imran Khan for adopting double standards, saying that on the one hand the PTI chief had criticised Mr Sharif and his family for theirinvolvement in the Panama scandal, but on the other he himself and his party leaders were involved in the offshore companies` scam.

`The logic of PTI chief Imran Khan is beyond comprehension as others are thieves if they are involved in Panama Leaks scam, but all is OK if Mr Khan himself or his party leaders are involved in such scams,` the ANP leader said.

Mr Asfandyar said that after the Khyber Bank scandal surfaced, Mr Khan had ordered the matter to be investigated by one of his provincial ministers, but on the other hand, he was demanding the formation of a judicial commission for investigation into the Panama scandal.

Similarly, he said, Mr Khan had parted ways with one of his coalition partners, the Qaumi Watan Party, over charges of corruption, but a few months later the same party was again made part of the provincial government and was given a clean chit from charges of corruption by the PTI leadership.

The ANP leader said that it was the need of the hour to carry out an impartial accountability against all corruptelements of the country, but it was not appropriate and reasonable if the accountability process or investigation was started against only Prime Minister Sharif and his family.

Referring to military operation against the Taliban and other terrorists, he claimed that military operations alone were not a solution to terrorism and that peace in Pakistan could not be restored unless terrorism was uprooted in Afghanistan.

He said that peace in both Pakistan and Afghanistan was interlinked.

He, however, said that misunderstanding between the two countries should be removed in the best interest of the people.

He said that the US, China and Iran should play their roles as guarantors between Pakistan and Afghanistan and both countries should be bound by the agreement.

He said that the federation of Pakistan was linked with federal and parliamentary democratic systems and if these systems were in danger, the security of Pakistan would also be in danger.
