Schools across Pindi district to be upgraded

RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government will be releasing Rs123.204 million for upgrading schools in the rural areas and providing missing facilities in the schools in the city next month.

A senior official of the education department told Dawn that the ruling party`s local leaders had recommended the schemes which the provincial government included under separate heads.

He said Rs25.645 million were allocated under the regular schemes of the annual development programme, Rs81.914 million under the head of works of the local government in different union councils and Rs15.645 million would be spent under the prime minister`s package in the National Assembly.

Under the plan, missing facilities will be provided in girl schools, including Govt MC Girls High School B-Block Satellite Town, Govt Shimla Islamia School Satellite Town, Govt Girls High School Pindora while Govt Elementary School Baroi, Kahuta will be upgraded.

Local government funds will be utilised for the provision of missing facilities in Government Girls High School Muslim Town worth Rs13 million while the construction of the upper storey of Anwaarul Islam School No 2 Barf Khana will be carried out for Rs20 million.

The construction of High School Dhoke Jumma will be done for Rs28 million and the purchase of land in Dheri Hassanabad will cost Rs20 million. Three schools in the Rawalpindi city will get Rs15.645 million under the Prime Minister Package for National Assembly constituencies.

A senior official of the education department said the government had to allocate funds for the construction of new buildings at the union council level as the provincial government wanted to open high schools in every union council.

He said the education authority was asked to conduct a survey of the district to ascertain the number of schools in union councils. However, he said, the education ministry had not yet conducted the survey and neither had the data on the schools.

He said some of the union councils did not even have one primary school and that funds should be allocated for new schools and the quality of education in government schools should also be improved.

He said e-libraries were to be established but government schools lacked facilities for this and suggested that computer labs be established in schools in urban and rural areas.
