By-polls for Kohat nazim being held tomorrow

KOHAT: The regional election commission announced on Monday that the by-polls for the new district nazim would be held on Wednesday.
It may be recalled that the Peshawar High Court had on June 7 removed the incumbent district nazim Maulana Niaz Mohammad Khattak f rom the post af ter he violated a power sharing formula agreed upon by political parties in the district council.
In February, Niaz Khattak had resigned in keeping with an accord among PTI, JUI-F and PML-N for bringing a new nazim. He belongs to JUI-F. He had tendered resignation to the chief minister in the presence of MPs and the district cabinets of all the three parties.
However, soon after meeting his party district head, Maulana Hayee, he changed his stance and denied he had resigned.
Af terwards, PTI and his own party asked him to abide by the agreement, but he approached the PHC which stayed his resignation. After which, the chief minister had approached the election commission to call re-election on the post, which was challenged by Niaz Khattak in the high court. However, this time the court did not allow him to continue with the job.
Against the expectations, he did not challenge the PHC verdict in the Supreme Court after which the verdict was sent to the election commission for further action.
COPS ARRESTED: A constable who forcibly stopped a volleyball match by resorting to firing in the air in Dhodha area was arrested and suspended on Monday.
A spokesman for Kohat police in a statement said a team led by constable Moshin Khan brawled with the members of the rival team. During the melee, the cop pulled his of ficial pistol and started firing in the air which panicked the players.
The Jarma police arrested him and shif ted him to lockup.
The DPO ordered departmental inquiry against him.

A press release issued on Monday said the focal person, Sareeruddin visited the houses of the martyrs` heirs and gave them cash, clothes and sweets. He also listened to their problems and assured them of their solution.
He told Dawn that he met 72 families in Karak, Swabi, Frontier Region of Kohat, Lakki Marwat, Hangu, Bannu, Nowshera and Charsadda districts.
