Treasury, opposition join hands to put off PA session

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly session on Monday was adjourned till Aug 27 as the lawmakers from the both sides of the aisle agreed that they should be among people of their respective constituencies due to the alarming situation caused by the recent monsoon rains in the province.

At the outset of the proceedings, former speaker Agha Siraj Durrani on a point of order moved an adjournment motion seeking adjournment of assembly sitting in view of the monsoon season.

His proposal was seconded by the opposition members.

Inviting speaker`s attention to the recent monsoon rains that had caused havocinseveralareasoftheprovince,he said that the situation had been very alarming for the past two days.`In this hour of trial, it is felt necessary that elected public representatives should be present in their constituencies to play their role in helping the affected people,` the former speaker said, adding that it would be better to adjourn the assembly session for a week.

The speaker, while agreeing to the proposal, sought opinion of the house and it was not opposed by the opposition members either.

Later, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar moved a motion to adjourn the meeting till August 27, which was approved unanimously by the house.

Earlier, PPP`s Imdad Patafi said on one of his points of order that the condition of Sukkur-Hyderabad motorway was very bad as there were fatal accidents every day.

He referred to the killing of seven people, including two brothers, in a trafficaccident on the motorway and demanded the early completion of the motorway portion from Sukkur to Hyderabad.

On the proposal of the law and parliamentary affairs minister, the speaker ruled to send the matter the provincial cabinet for consideration.

Mr Pitafi also mentioned the relief of Rs14 per unit to the electricity consumers in Punjab and demanded of the provincial government to provide such relief in the province too.

Shabbir Qureshi, a member of the assembly supported by Pakistan Tehreeki-Insaf, said that the PPP member had correctly identified the problems of province and asked the provincial government to at least give the good news that the Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway would be built during their five-year tenure.

PPP`s Nisar Ahmed Khuhro said that the National Highway Authority, responsible for construction of motorways andhighways, did not fall under the provincial category. `Those who were in the government from 2018 to 2022 should be asked why they have not laid even a single brick,` he jibed referring to the PTI.

He said that the motorway was a federal project and its completion was not the responsibility of the provincial government, but the federal government.

Muhammad Farooq, the lone member of Jamaat-i-Islami, said that entire system of civic facilities in the city had been disrupted due to recent rains and demanded that the provincial government allocate special grant for the damage caused to the city`s infrastructure by the rains.

He said that the provincial government had claimed to have distributed Rs1.2 million funds to each union committee for uplift works, but only Rs500,000 were given instead.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan lawmaker Taha Ahmed said that a child had fallen into a sewer in his constituency and the untrained staff of rescue service failed to recover the victim. `The Sindh government should find out who has hired such untrained staff and whether they have the necessary equipment or not,` he urged.

Muhammad Waseem of the MQM-P said that sewage was flowing in the city streets and asked the government to pay attention to the rehabilitation of the infrastructure of Karachi and Hyderabad.

He said that he agreed with Agha Siraj Durrani`s suggestion that elected public representatives should be among the people of their constituencies at the time of natural calamity.
