Suspect in prosecutor`s murder died of gunshot wounds: report

By Munawer Azeem 2013-09-20
ISLAMABAD, Sept 19: Haris Khan, a suspect in the assassination of the FIA prosecutor whose body was recovered from a house in a Bhara Kahu village on Tuesday, had apparently died of wounds received from firearms.

This was stated by a four-member medical board on Thursday, police said.

Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali, the FIA prosecutor, was shot dead in the federal capital`s G-9 sector on May 3, 2013.

Khan`s body was dug out from the house at Dhakhli Phulgran after another suspect in the murder case, Hammad Adil, during interrogation told the police about its burial. The house was owned by Hammad.

The board, comprising pathology professor Ashoke Kumar Tanwani, medico-legal officers Farukh Kamal Naseer and surgeon Tanveer Khaliq, found four holes on the t-shirt of the deceased, the police said.

The body seemed to be three to fourmonths old and was decomposed.

Samples of bone and hair were collected from the remains for DNA test to establish the identity and race of the suspect, the police added.

Meanwhile, the Margalla police arrested another person, Adnan Adil, for his alleged involvement in the murder case.

However, the police were reluctant to share the details with the media. Those speaking about the arrest unofficially contradicted each other.

A police officer said Adnan was arrested from Peshawar Mor by the Margalla police for allegedly helping his brother bury the body of Haris Khan at the lawn of their house.

He has nothing to do with the killing of the prosecutor, the officer said, adding Adnan was an accomplice of his brother in burying the body.

However, he added, Adnan was allegedly in-volved in the attack on a Nato terminal at Tarnol in 2010. On the other hand, another police officer said Adnan`s arrest was made from Bhara Kahu after his brother disclosed his involvement in the prosecutor`s murder.

Both the officers said the body was recovered from the house on the information provided by the two brothers.

Interestingly, the police had claimed to have arrested Hammad on September 16, and recovered the body on September 17.

The police had also claimed that the body was recovered on the light of information provided by the two brothers.

However, Adnan`s arrest was shown on August 18.

Sources in the police said Hammad was picked early on August 31 while Adnan later the same day along with their other brother and wife of Hammad.

Later, Hammad`s wife and brother were released. The police told the family thatAdnan would also be released soon after verification of his status. However, both Hammad and Adnan were not formerly arrested.

Later, on the intervention of the prime minister secretariat and the interior ministry about the disappearance of Hammad, the police showed his formal arrest on September 16. Later, it did the same with Adnan.

A police officer said during the 15-day custody, Hammad had `confessed` to his affiliation with Mohammad Tanveer, an Al Qaeda operative, and involvement in attacks on a law enforcement agency`s bus in Rawalpindi, assassination of army surgeon general Mushtaq Baig, suicide attack at the Danish embassy and Nato terminals.

He also `confessed` to his involvement in the assassination of the FIA prosecutor and minorities` minister Shahbaz Bhatti, added the officer.
