Attack on Delhi Dawn

DETAILS of the attack on Dawn Press at Delhi on Sept 11 were given by Qadeer Ahmad, an orderly of `Dawn`, Delhi, who came by the `Ghost Special` on Friday [Sept 19]. The Dawn Office in the Faiz Bazar area was attacked by armed crowds of Sikhs on the night of Sept 11.

The Sikhs went up to the roofs of surrounding Hindu houses and opened fire on Dawn Office from three sides. The raiders threw petrol and other incendiary material on the of fice building and tried to set it on fire. The night staff, led by sub-editors, Israr, Idrees and Shams, fought the flames and extinguished the fire.

Finding themselves powerless against bullets the staff escaped through a window into an adjoining Muslim house. The damage to the Dawn Office that night was not much. Ikram, the `Dawn` driver, who was sleeping in the delivery van parked outside the Dawn Office was killed by the attackers and set on fire.
