KARACHI: The Jamaat-iIslami staged sit-ins on main intersections across the city on Tuesday in protest against `unbearable` inflation and growing prices of petroleum products.
The party warned that it would give another call for similar protests at 100 different points of the metropolis next time, if the government did not control the galloping inflation and cut fuel prices.
The JI had initially announced that it would `block 15 major arteries` by staging sit-ins. But the party staged nine sit-ins at different points of the metropolis. A large number of people including, women and children, participated in the sit-ins.
The protests caused traffic jams on key roads, where JI workers and supporters had staged the sit-ins.
The traffic police in a statement said the vehicular movement remained affected due to the sit-ins, which ended at sunset.
Karachi JI chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, along with workers and supporters of his party, staged a sit-in near the Nursery bus stop on Sharea Faisal.
Addressing the protesters, he said that his party would continue staging such demonstrations at 100 points in the city against the growing inflation, rising prices of petroleum products and electricity.
`The caretaker government seems to be no different from previous governments,` he said.
`Mr Anwaarul Haq Kakar [caretaker prime minister] what a joke it is that you don`t have the powers to reduce the prices of flour, lentils and pulses, but you have the powers to increase the inflation.
We would not let you escape.
We will come after you with all our constitutional, democratic rights of protest.
He demanded the government to bring feudal lords under the tax net and provide relief to poor masses.
