Arms seized in Mansehra MANSEHRA, Oct 19: Law-enforcement agencies foiled a sabotage attempt and seized arms and equipment used in making explosives.

Khuram Rasheed, Senior Superintended of Police, told reporters here on Saturday that the seizure included a Russian made rocket propelled grenade gun, six RPG grenades, an indigenously made expulsive device, a fertiliser bag, six fuses, two rifles and a kilogram of nails.

The official didn`t mention the place where raid was carried out.

However, sources on condition of anonymity said that lawenforcement agencies carried out the raid in Bakrial area on a tip-off and recovered arms meant for carrying out subversive activities.

They said that a number of miscreants arrested in Abbottabad before Eidul Azha belonged to banned outfits, who wanted to carry out terror activities in the region during Eid holidays. -Correspondent Preserving Khowar language CHITRAL, Oct 19: Local MNA Shahzada Iftikharuddin has expressed concern over government`s apathy towards preservation and promotion of Khowar language.

He was addressing the book launching ceremony of the poetic collection `Nugta-i-Nigah` by Maula Nigah Nigah here.

Mr Iftikharuddin said it was regrettable that language of over half a million people had received no attention from any official quarter.

He expressed his resolve to work for the promotion of Khowar language, its literature and culture. `I will also use the floor of the house in this regard,` he said.

Lauding the richness of Khowar literature, he claimed that it was not inferior to any regional language of the province.

The lawmaker said the city radio station had a transmission capacity of less than one kilometer radius despite its establishment 20 years back.

Poet Maula Nigah, Gul Murad Hsrat, Abdul Wali Khan, Amir Khan Mir, Javed Hayat and others also addressed the function. -Correspondent Boy shotdead GHALANAI, Oct 19: Unidentified persons on Saturday shot dead a teenaged boy in Ekkaghound tehsil here, local residents said.

Officials said some unknown gunmen entered the house of Samin Khan in the wee hours on Saturday in Bahi Kore Michnai area and opened fire on Shakir Khan, 18, son of Samin, killing him on the spot. The accused managed to escape the area.

The officials said that reason behind the murder could not be ascertained, adding that efforts had been launched to arrest the accused.

Meanwhile, local residents have accused Idrees Safi, a senator from the area, of not resolving their basic problems despite getting huge development funds in this regard.

Talking to Dawn here they said that the senator had not carried out a single development project in whole of the agency despite making tall claims. -Correspondent Two robbers injured KARAK, Oct 19: Two robbers were injured when they tried to snatch a motorcycle from a person here on Saturday.

Police said Shah Alam was going to home from Karak city when two robbers intercepted him near Kanda Karak and snatched motorcycle form him on gunpoint.

`But the man opened fire on the robbers from behind, injuring both of them,` they said.

The officials said one of the robbers identified as Saleem Khan of old bazaar Karak was seriously injured and shifted to district headquarters hospital. Later, he was referred to Peshawar in critical condition. The other robber managed to escape the area, said the police.

Karak police registered FIR of the incident and started investigation.

Meanwhile, five persons were injured when a car going to Bannu from Kohat overturned on Indus Highway near Amberi Kalay Chowk here, police said.

In another incident, two persons were injured when unknown persons opened fire on them in Takht-i-Nusrati area.

-Correspondent Contaminated water KOHAT, Oct 19: Residential colonies in Jarwanda and Bangashabad areas are getting contaminated water.

The people have been forced to use filthy water for drinking and other purposes with the municipal committee having done nothing to rectify the situation.

People complained that sewage from the main drain passing through the area had contaminated the water in the wells dug by the people, causing worms in the water.

They said that the sewerage line was choked due to which filthy water seeped into wells.

`We have to use bottled water to avoid contracting water borne diseases,` said Asghar Ayub, a local resident.

They demanded of the municipal committee to clear the choked drain. -Correspondent Prisoners` problems MANSEHRA, Oct 19: National Assembly deputy speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi has said the government will address problems facing the prisoners.

`Government wants to ensure that rights of prisoners given in the constitution are protected,` said Mr Abbasi while speaking to inmates of district jail here on Saturday.

The inmates of Abbottabad district jail are also kept here as the reconstruction work on the prison is in progress following October 2005 devastating earthquake.

Mr Abbasi also heard the problems of the inmates and said that they could now meet their relatives on Saturday, which is usually a public holiday.

He said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz led federal government was making efforts to address energy crisis and unemployment. `Various loans schemes are being launched to benefit unemployed youth,` he said.

Earlier in the day Mr Abbasi also spoke at an Eid Milan party at Chamati area where he said mega development schemes would be started in the region. Correspondent Enrolment drive continues TIMERGARA, Oct 19: A total of 16,209 out of school children have been enroled in different parts of Lower Dir during the ongoing enrolment campaign launched by the elementary and secondary education department.

This was stated by the district education officer (male) Hafiz Mohammad Ibrahim while talking to journalists here on Saturday.

He said that during the campaign 9,263 boys and 6,946 girls were enroled to schools in Talash, Maidan, Balambat, Timergara, Chakdara, Munda and Samarbagh.

He said the progress made by teachers in the district was satisfactory. He said the newly enroled children had been provided with free books.

The DEO said that efforts would continue in future too so no child remained out of school in the district. Correspondent
