Medical training

2024-10-20
THERE is an urgent need to introduce post-graduation diplomas of six months or a year in various disciplines across the medical profession. No doubt, internationally recognised Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) isaccepted asthe standardpost-graduate qualification, but it is not possible for everyone to invest four more years in studies after five years of MBBS.

The average age at which individuals generally pass medical school is 24 years.

A series of social and psychological factors, including financial crises and family responsibilities, push many to work for bread and butter. There is no chance for them to even attempt a four-year post-graduation qualification. The dream of such a qualification remains just that; a dream.

Thus, the government and the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) need to introduce short postgraduation medical courses, which would upgrade the knowledge of the doctors who are unable to opt for the FCPS path.
