Death of flight instructor in Mina stampede confirmed

KARACHI: The family of a female flight instructor for a private airline, Bushra Khalig, who went missing along with hundreds of other pilgrims in the Mina stampede, finally received information about her death on Thursday.The information was provided nearly two months after her death by her younger brother, who has been in Mina in an attempt to trace her following the tragedy, as a DNA match confirmed her identification.

According to her sister, Uzma Khalig,BushrahadgonetoMakkah to perform Haj along with her two friends, Rida Eman and KhadijaSaeed. The confirmation of their deaths came to the family af ter a lot of hustle, said Uzma.

`It was through the information cell in Mina that we finally received confirmation of Bushra`s death. She is buried in the Mina graveyard.

She was buried a few days after the stampede in Mina,` she said.

She added: `What is painful isthat it was my brother who had to contact relevant departments rather than the other way around.

The Mina stampede is considered to be the biggest tragedy to have hit the annual pilgrimage in decades. For a month after the tragedy, the death toll was hugely debated in the media as authorities in Saudi Arabia gave a conservativefigure. The number of dead, according to Saudi ofñcials,is 769 killed, while 934 are said to be injured. But individual accounts and tally of the number of dead from media reports indicate a bigger death toll than the one shared by the officials.

Reports received so far show that 102 Pakistanis are considered dead in the stampede.
